INSULIN RESISTANCE VS INSULIN SENSITIVITY

There is a LOT of talk about insulin, insulin sensitivity and insulin resistance in the health and wellness field these days. But most people just associate insulin with diabetes and write it off. We wish it were that easy, but insulin and how your body reacts to it is important for everyone to be aware of!

What is Insulin?

Insulin is a hormone made and regulated by the pancreas. Its big job is to regulate your blood sugar levels. Sugar, or glucose, is your body’s preferred and main source of energy, and insulin is essential for allowing your body to use sugar as energy.

Often, insulin is described as the key that opens the doors of your cells. Once that door is open, glucose can leave your blood and move into your cells for energy.

If your pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or your body doesn’t use it properly, it can lead to high blood sugar or type 2 diabetes.

Insulin Sensitivity

One “sensitivity” that is a GOOD thing. Insulin sensitivity is how effectively your cells respond to insulin. Meaning, high insulin sensitivity is when your cells are ready to respond to insulin and remove glucose from your bloodstream. This helps in maintaining healthy blood sugar levels and reducing the risk of Type 2 Diabetes.

Insulin Resistance

Insulin resistance is the exact opposite- when your body does not respond properly to insulin.

When this happens and your cells aren’t working like they should and they can’t use the sugar as energy or for storage. This leads to sugar building up in your blood, which leads to your pancreas making more insulin to try and fight increasing blood sugar.

If your cells become too resistant to insulin, it can lead to prediabetes or Type 2 Diabetes.

Insulin resistance is often associated with obesity, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome or polycystic ovarian syndrome.

This can be helped by focusing on nutrition, physical activity and managing weight.

You can even supplement with the proper nutrients. Adding GlucAffect®, a patented, award-winning formula designed to support healthy blood sugar levels as part of a broader strategy to support metabolic wellness. GlucAffect® was the focus of a 24-week clinical study, where participants experienced significant improvements in key blood sugar markers as well as reductions in weight and waist circumference.
